Alex Scott on BBC Match of the Day

Alex Scott has taken pole position in the race to replace Gary Lineker as the next Match of the Day presenter.

Lineker’s recent announcement that he will bow out from MOTD at the close of the 2024-25 season after a record-breaking 26-year run has lit up the sports world, with fans and pundits speculating on who will take his place.

Scott, backed heavily by bettors, has seen her odds slashed to 2/1 (33.3% implied probability) from 6/1 (14%) in just 24 hours, making her the odds-on favourite for this high-profile role.

One of the first female football pundits to break into the mainstream on Sky and BBC, Scott has now overtaken former frontrunner and MOTD2 presenter Mark Chapman. Chapman’s odds have drifted to 5/2 (28.6%) from 6/4 (40%).

Meanwhile, Dion Dublin has entered the race as the third favourite, with bookies placing him at 4/1 (20%). The ex-England star is a familiar face on various networks, including the BBC.

Women are dominating the top contender list, with Kelly Cates (4/1), Clare Balding (13/2), and Gabby Logan (10/1) also in the running.
