News reporter Karina Carvalho will become weeknightpresenter for ABC News Western Australia after Alicia Gorey’s departure in four weeks’ time.
The anouncement – shrouded in secrecy until today – meant that not even her family and friends could be told. “I feel so honoured to have this role,” Carvalho, 27, said. “A lot of privileged people have sat in the chair before me.”
She impressed management with her tenacity and keen news sense. According to state news editor Kim Jordan, the choice for Aunty’s latest news presenter came down to four people. “In her time with us, Karina has been an impressive addition to a talented newsroom,” he said.
Carvalho takes up the position following experience reporting for the BBC, including its coverage of the 2005 London Bombings and current affairs program Hard Talk.
She will spend the next four weeks training to be a news presenter.
