Where are you from?
Born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire
How did you get started in Broadcasting?
Through hospital radio and by answering the phones at BBC Radio Cornwall. One of the presenters left suddenly and the boss asked me if I would like to present a programme on a Sunday afternoon. When was that?
That all happened when I was 18 and just about to go off to university
Why news broadcasting?
You never know what is going to happen when you’re on air and that makes it so exciting. I have always been interested in news and current affairs and being able to present on a news channel is a dream come true. It’s even better if you’re on duty when a big story breaks.
Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
I have worked for Tyne Tees TV (where I still work) and for Yorkshire TV’s regional news show Calendar. I also spent 6 months as the health correspondent for the now defunct digital channel Wellbeing which was broadcast from YTV’s studios in Leeds.
What is your Best on-air moment?
Being on air during the Iraq War earlier this year – that really was a test with so much happening, so many reports coming in, lots of guests to talk to etc. It was a real challenge and I loved it
What is your Worst on-air moment?
Presenting a live outside broadcast from Whitby which almost fell off air because of so many technical problems…I still have nightmares about that programme but thankfully it has disappeared from the tape library.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love going to the gym, going out with friends for dinner and/or drinks and having a laugh.
What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
Get as much work experience as you can at a tv and radio station and accept you might have to work your way up through an organisation to get what you want (ie; don’t expect to go into a radio/tv station and get the top presentation/reporters job).
A big thanks to Jonathan for taking part.
