Former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips has announced she is battling Alzheimer’s.

The 62 year old told the Mirror “This disease has ravaged my family and now it has come for me.

“And all over the country there are people of all different ages whose lives are being affected by it – it’s heartbreaking.

“I just hope I can help find a cure which might make things better for others in the future.”

Fiona joined GMTV in 1993 as entertainment correspondent and was promoted to GMTV/Reuters Television’s LA correspondent in December 1993.

From 1997 to 2008, she was the main anchor on GMTV, presenting GMTV Today every Monday to Wednesday. She left the programme in December 2008.

Phillips was told she had the illness a year ago after suffering months of brain fog and anxiety.

She is now undergoing trials for a revolutionary new drug which scientists hope could slow or even reverse the illness.
