The BBC will broadcast further coverage of World Cup 2018 this afternoon as Nigeria take on Iceland at the Volgograd Arena, where the teams play their second match of Group D.
Nigeria lost their opening fixture against Croatia on Saturday, so they will know they need to get something out of this game, or they will be eliminated.
By contrast, Iceland started well, drawing 1-1 with two-time champions Argentina in their first-ever World Cup finals match.
Having only registered one victory at their last three World Cups combined, Nigeria will look to improve on that record and utilise their greater tournament experience against the débutantes.
Figures such as Jon Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa, all of whom will be familiar to fans of the Premier League, could prove crucial to their country’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
Iceland boast few household names among their ranks, if any, but that didn’t stop them from creating headlines around Europe at Euro 2016 when they made it as far as the quarter-finals, as they grew into the competition after initially starting off slowly with draws against Portugal and Hungary.
Having faced Argentina in their opening fixture, it is expected that the outcome of this match will go a long way to determining whether they head into their final contest against Croatia with an opportunity to write another enthralling chapter in their nation’s history.
